Walnut Creek’s U9 boys team finished a great 2015 campaign on November 15th. The “Old Boys” take their name from the Newell’s Old Boys, an Argentinian soccer club noted for its youth divisions. Players from the club’s youths who have represented Argentina at World Cups are Gabriel Batistuta, Américo Gallego, Jorge Valdano, Gabriel Heinze, Roberto Sensini, Mauricio Pocchettino and Maxi Rodríguez, among others. Lionel Messi also played in the club’s youths as did Diego Maradona briefly.

Walnut Creek’s version of the Old Boys include the following stand out players: Simon Appel, Michael Borovikov, Aidan Cooper, Luciano Gallardo, Chris Giannini, Taiyo Lee, Matt Rajecki, Jonny Roth, Miles Taylor, Brett van Erp, Dawson Weer and Connor Weitl. Old Boys started a great year by winning the San Francisco Evolution tournament in May. Over the course of the season, the team developed chemistry, improved soccer skills and showed sportsmanship on and off the field. The Old Boys won each of their Round 1 State Cup games putting them into a position to compete for the Norcal State Championship. They won their first 2 State Cup Round 2 games but lost the 3rd round game in monsoon conditions to the eventual State Cup Champion, CenCal Cosmos. Old Boys fought hard the rest of the way and finished #6 among U9 boys teams in Northern California.

Coach Gabe did a fantastic job bringing this group together and molding them into a competitive and exciting team to watch in just their first year. Surely the team has a great year ahead of them in 2016 and has a lot to be proud of in 2015. Congratulations Old Boys!
