U16 Galaxy Tournament Champions
The Seven Year Drought Ends! Galaxy Tournament Champions At Last!
The WCSC U16G Galaxy is starting its seventh year as girls have come and gone, great memories and friendships have been made, and the players have developed exceptional skills. However no Galaxy team has won a tournament championship until July 26, 2015 at the Super Classico in San Jose. After grinding out a very physical 1-0 win against MT. Hamilton Galaxy beat Lafayette rivals, Eclipse, 3-0. On Sunday morning, Galaxy played the host club team, San Jose Cross Fire, in a final qualifier game. Galaxy had two defensive players missing from the day before and only one sub. There were some defensive break downs with players filling in new defensive positions and Galaxy lost 3-5. Galaxy and Cross Fire were tied atop the qualifier standings and therefore found themselves in the championship round against each other. Galaxy had no subs for the championship game and made two defensive switches. The girls rallied themselves as nearly all of them played through minor ailments and all played through fatigue in the 70 minute game. Galaxy was up 3-0 when the game ending whistle blew but unlike other championship winners there was no loud cheering, jubilation, and cartwheels after a first tournament win (first for most or all of the girls). They exhaustedly limped off the field to their water bottles and joyfully chattered amongst themselves. The parents, of course, were LOUD and proud of their daughter’s resolve, endurance, teamwork, and play. Congratulations Team Galaxy!
